In such a lens, this paper proceeds in the manner of Althusser\u2019s<br \/>argument, and the critique applies to popular music in the Philippines<br \/>vis-\u00e0-vis Gramsci\u2019s cultural hegemony. With such a framework, this<br \/>paper looks into the albums of Musikang Bayan (People\u2019s Music) from<br \/>2001 to 2019 and employs qualitative content analysis. In doing so, the<br \/>themes are dealt with vis-\u00e0-vis the Philippine socio-politico-economic<br \/>condition. The country\u2019s socio-cultural atmosphere in the mainstream<br \/>music industry is \u201cnot so\u201d critical since social institutions are part of the<br \/>relations of class domination (Althusser 2014, xxiv). Only if music is<br \/>oriented with the people\u2019s struggle will it become scientific and carry<br \/>forward emancipatory politics transforming society.
