Vilbar"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Paper presented during Mindanao State University Iligan Institute Technology Department of English Research Colloquium on Social Media,  (Discourse, Culture, and Language. \u00a01-2 May 2019, MSU-IIT, Iligan City<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abstract <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This presentation discusses\nhow to use social media in education and conduct research about the impact of\nsocial on teaching-learning. First it presents the research on \u201cUsing Facebook\nas a Learning Management System in Teaching\u201d. This study presents the\nattitudes and perceptions of the students towards using Facebook (FB) Group in\nteaching Research. It was conducted for one semester to 75 secondary students.\nEmploying descriptive research, this study used the Student Attitudes and\nPerceptions of Using FB Survey by Pollara &amp; Zhu (2011) and focus group\ndiscussion. Findings show that students \u201cSomewhat agree\u201d that using FB Group in\nteaching Research developed their content learning, motivation, and\ncollaborative skills. The instant messaging promotes collaborative learning and\ndirect interaction among co-students and teachers. Despite the distractions in\nthe FB Group environment and the lack of internet connection among the\nstudents\u2019 homes, the respondents still suggested to continue using FB Groups as\nan alternative elearning system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second presentation\ndiscusses a collaborative research between UP Cebu Adjunct Professor Sean\nEdgley on using Instagram in writing poetry and micro fiction. Over two months,\nProf. Edgley conducted workshops at UP High School Cebu, supervised by Dr. Vilbar.\nIn addition to providing background on poetry and short fiction, the course\npresented students with micro-literature and invited them to self-publish their\nown writing on Instagram. Using mixed methods research, student engagement was\ntracked over the course, using pretest-posttest surveys, journals, and\ninterviews. Findings show that students\u2019 skills and motivation to write poetry\nand fiction were developed.
