{"id":42,"date":"2019-01-12T06:17:22","date_gmt":"2019-01-12T06:17:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cvsc.upcebu.edu.ph\/?p=42"},"modified":"2019-01-12T06:17:22","modified_gmt":"2019-01-12T06:17:22","slug":"2018-year-end-cvsc-narrative-report-about-its-cids-funded-research-project-on-sustainable-tourism-in-central-visayas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cvsc.upcebu.edu.ph\/index.php\/2019\/01\/12\/2018-year-end-cvsc-narrative-report-about-its-cids-funded-research-project-on-sustainable-tourism-in-central-visayas\/","title":{"rendered":"2018 Year-end CVSC Narrative Report About its CIDS-Funded Research Project on Sustainable Tourism in Central Visayas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>Last\nDecember 2018, the UP Cebu Central Visayas Studies Center was able to produce\nand submit to UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies (CIDS) a\ndiscussion paper entitled \u201cConcerns, Challenges, and Opportunities in\nSustainable Tourism Development in Central Visayas: Specific and Common\nConcerns in Cebu and Bohol\u201d. The discussion paper contains presentation and\ndiscussion of facts, trends, updates, concerns, challenges, threats and\nopportunities in sustainable tourism development in Central Visayas,\nspecifically in Cebu and Bohol. Most of the data were culled from a whole-day\nRound Table Discussion (RTD) with Key Players in Tourism from government\nagencies and a private organization and interested faculty members from the\nfour Colleges of UP Cebu held last October 10, 2018 at the UP Cebu AVR 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The invited guests who were present during the RTD\nwere: Ms. Maria Teresa Alambra, Assistant Regional Director of NEDA-7; Ms.\nJudilyn Quiachon, Senior Tourism Supervising Officer of DOT-7; Ms. Josephine\nRemolador-Cabarrus, Head of Bohol Tourism Office; Ms. Bernadette Esmero, DENR\nRepresentative; Ms. Hearty Rizarri, Cebu City Tourism Officer; and Architect\nOmar Maxwell Espina, member of the Board of Trustees, Arts Council of Cebu<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nFaculty Members who participated in the RTD were the following: Dr. Tiffany\nTan, Dean of the School of Management; Dr. Florence Evacitas, Chair, Department\nof Biology and Environmental Science; Prof. Jay Jore, Coordinator, Fine Arts\nProgram; Dr. Jocelyn Pinzon, Faculty member of the College of Communication,\nArt &amp; Design (CCAD); Prof. Palmy Pe Tudtud, Faculty member, CCAD; Prof.\nLilia Tio, Faculty member, CCAD; Prof. Mae Claire Jabines, Faculty member,\nCollege of Social Sciences; Prof. Nelia Ereno, Faculty Member, Department of\nMathematics and Physics; Dr. Belinda F. Espiritu, Director, CVSC. Ms. Cora Jane\nC. Lawas, University Researcher, and Ms. Lyn Desucatan, Project Research Aide,\nwere also present during the round table discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CVSC also conducted a half-day workshop on scoping\nstudies last November 21, 2018 from 12:00 noon to 4:30 pm during which time three\nstudy leaders were identified. They are: 1) Dr. Florence Evacitas \u2013 for\nenvironmental sustainability of ecotourism sites in Cebu; 2) Prof. Mae Claire\nJabines \u2013 for the sociocultural and economic impacts of tourism in Mactan, Cebu;\nand 3) Prof. Jay Jore \u2013 for art tourism in Cebu. The study leaders each signed\na scoping study contract which stipulates that they were entitled to an\nhonorarium in two tranches. The first tranche was released upon signing of the\ncontract and the second tranche was released upon submission of the study\nproposal with a line item budget on December 12, 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UP\nCebu\u2019s <strong>Research<\/strong> <strong>Project on\nSustainable Tourism in Central Visayas <\/strong>aims to support the regional\ndevelopment agenda of sustainable and inclusive economic growth by mapping out\nand implementing a sustainable tourism research agenda for Central Visayas. The\nTravel &amp; Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 of the World Economic Forum\nstates that \u201ctravel and tourism and its enabling ecosystems have proven to be\nsignificant drivers of economic growth\u201d and recognizes that this sector is an\nenabler for inclusive and sustainable growth. According to the report, T&amp;T\n\u201chas potential to play a key role in creating high quality employment\nopportunities, act as a vehicle to protect and restore the planet\u2019s\nbiodiversity and help build bridges between people and cultures.\u201d&nbsp; In a report , which ranked competitiveness of\ncountries in the T&amp;T sector, the Philippines ranked 79th out of 136\ncountries and scored low in environmental sustainability (118th), moderate in\ncultural resources (60th) and high in natural resources (37th). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UP\nCebu has brought in its multidisciplinary expertise to look into issues,\nchallenges, constraints success stories, prospects, and opportunities in the\ntourism industry of the region, focusing on three areas of sustainable tourism:\n1) Ecological balance and environmental integrity; 2) sociocultural and\neconomic impacts of tourism; and 3) cultural tourism, with focus on art\ntourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nfirst year of the research project was geared to exploring not only the trends,\nstatistics, and updates in tourism in Central Visayas, but more importantly, it\nasked the question, \u201cHow sustainable are the tourism industries in Central\nVisayas?\u201d A discussion paper has been written which looks into the measures\ntaken, the challenges faced, issues and concerns, and opportunities in\nsustainable tourism in Central Visayas. It sought to find out the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> the concerns, opportunities, and challenges in the sustainability of tourism in Central Visayas based on the environmental, economic, and sociocultural indicators for a sustainable tourism <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> the contributing factors and some best practices towards sustainable tourism in Central Visayas; and <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> the researchable topics for a sustainable tourism in Central Visayas <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last December 2018, the UP Cebu Central Visayas Studies Center was able to produce and submit to UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies (CIDS) a discussion paper entitled \u201cConcerns, Challenges, and Opportunities in Sustainable Tourism Development in Central Visayas: Specific and Common Concerns in Cebu and Bohol\u201d.
