{"id":214,"date":"2019-05-21T07:24:54","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T07:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cvsc.upcebu.edu.ph\/?p=214"},"modified":"2019-05-21T07:24:54","modified_gmt":"2019-05-21T07:24:54","slug":"cvscs-history-and-mandate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cvsc.upcebu.edu.ph\/index.php\/2019\/05\/21\/cvscs-history-and-mandate\/","title":{"rendered":"CVSC&#8217;s History and Mandate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Central Visayas Studies Center was instituted in\n1999 to respond to the need for inputs on decision-making on policies affecting\nthe development of Cebu, the region, and the country as a whole; and the need\nto respond to the challenge of the need to stress the cultural dimension of any\nmeaninguful effort towards self-reliance. It envisions itself to be \u201cthe main\nresource center where the multidisciplinary expertise of UP Cebu College\u2019s\nfaculty is tapped to provide a more holistic approach to understanding problems\nand issues affectign the province and the region\u201d (UP Gazette, 1999).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The\nCenter was instituted to achieve the following aims (UP Gazette, 1999):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To conduct research on the following areas of concern:\nplanning and urban concerns, trade and industry, environmental\/coastal resource\nmanagement, food security, skills and education, arts (including performing,\nvisual, and communicatory arts) and culture, gender (including development\nstudies on children), politics and governance, regional history, regional and\nexternal linkages, security\/peace and order;<\/li><li>To establish baseline data on the aforementioned areas;<\/li><li>To establish a library\/collection of cultural works of known\nand lesser known writers and artists who have made significant contributions to\ncultural life in Cebu and in the region;<\/li><li>To initiate public fora and dialogues and provide a venue for\ndiscussion on socio-economic and political issues; and<\/li><li>To organize art exhibits, performances such as theater\nproductions and concerts, lectures and workshops on the performing, visual, and\ncommunication arts which highlight the distinct Central Visayas culture. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout\nthe years, CVSC has become the Research Office of UP Cebu, in addition to its\noriginal mandate.
